How to Relocate to Canada from Nigeria: Programmes, Permits and PR

How to relocate to Canada from Nigeria depends on the programme and the applicant’s circumstances. Canadian immigration is not a universal sequence of temporary residence followed by permanent residency after two years. Permission to travel, authorisation to study or work and permanent resident status are different parts of the system.

Some economic programmes allow an application for permanent residence without first studying or working in Canada. Other routes depend on qualifying Canadian experience, a family relationship or provincial requirements. Nigerian citizenship identifies part of the applicant’s situation; it does not select one programme or establish eligibility by itself.

What each document actually does

Document or status Purpose What it does not establish
Entry visa Travel under the applicable conditions An automatic right to permanent residence
Study permit or work permit Authorised study or employment, subject to conditions A guaranteed transition to PR after a fixed period
Permanent resident status and PR card Permanent residence and a document evidencing it Citizenship or automatic loss of PR solely when the card expires

Descriptions such as “a Canadian visa” can conceal these differences. The exact name of the application matters because it determines the purpose, supporting evidence and conditions after approval. Renewing a temporary document is not the same decision as granting permanent residence.

Canada Express Entry: a selection system, not a separate visa

Express Entry manages applications for three federal economic programmes: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program and Canadian Experience Class. Their eligibility requirements differ. Foreign work experience, Canadian experience and qualification in a skilled trade are not interchangeable routes into the same category.

A candidate checks the programme requirements and, if eligible, submits a profile to the pool. Profiles are ranked, and invitations are issued through rounds of selection. Entering the pool does not guarantee an invitation. Receiving an invitation leads to a separate application with supporting documents and a decision on permanent residence.

Language results, education and employment evidence can be central to preparation. Where required, an assessment of an overseas qualification is different from permission to practise a regulated profession in Canada. A qualification issued in Nigeria does not remove that distinction between immigration assessment and professional licensing.

Proof of funds also depends on the programme and circumstances. It is required for the Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades programmes unless an applicable exemption is met. Canadian Experience Class applicants are treated differently. A single bank-balance figure therefore cannot describe every Express Entry application.

Provincial selection and family sponsorship

The Provincial Nominee Program connects selection to the needs of participating provinces and territories. Streams have their own conditions, and a nomination does not replace the federal permanent-residence stage. Some streams operate through Express Entry; others use a different application process.

The intended province matters as a place to live, rather than simply as a source of extra points. The relevant stream and its conditions determine what evidence is needed. Registering a company does not by itself create PR either: business-related immigration has separate requirements from the ordinary act of incorporating a business.

Family sponsorship is assessed through the eligible relationship and the requirements applying to the sponsor and applicant. Having a relative in Canada does not mean that every kind of family connection qualifies. A story about joining a parent or spouse cannot substitute for the rules of the actual sponsorship category.

Study, graduate work and the gap between them

A study permit concerns education. A Post-Graduation Work Permit, or PGWP, concerns work after qualifying studies and is subject to its own eligibility requirements. Graduating from any Canadian course does not automatically produce a PGWP. The institution, programme and applicable language or field-of-study rules can all matter.

There are consequently several separate decisions within the plan to study, work and then seek PR. Admission does not guarantee a work permit, and a PGWP does not guarantee permanent residence. Tuition and living costs remain actual expenses even where a later immigration outcome is uncertain.

How much does relocating from Nigeria involve?

The question “how much to relocate to Canada from Nigeria” has no single answer across these routes. An economic permanent-residence application, a study plan and a family application contain different cost items. Money demonstrated as settlement funds is also different from a processing fee paid to the authorities.

  • Application preparation: applicable language testing, educational assessment, records, translations and document delivery.
  • Official processing: the charges and any biometrics or examination requirements for the chosen application.
  • The move itself: transport, baggage and any temporary accommodation.
  • Settlement: housing and living expenses for the actual household and location.
  • Study, where relevant: tuition and related expenses, assessed separately from any hoped-for later employment.

A naira estimate needs the date, currency conversion basis and household size. It also needs to distinguish money already spent from funds that remain available for settlement. A total copied from another person’s application may combine those categories differently and cannot establish a universal budget.

Canada permanent residency is separate from citizenship

Expiry of a PR card does not by itself end permanent resident status. The general residency obligation is at least 730 days within a five-year period, with specific rules allowing some time abroad to count. That obligation concerns keeping PR; it is not a rule granting PR after two years of temporary residence.

Citizenship uses a different physical-presence test: generally at least 1,095 qualifying days in the five years before applying. Eligible time before PR may count at half a day per day, up to the statutory limit. Other citizenship requirements still apply. Temporary permission, a PR card and citizenship should not be treated as one calendar.

Earlier migrant accounts have a limited scope

These translated accounts are retained from the Russian-language source. They describe Russian migrants, not Nigerian applicants, and do not establish the availability of a particular programme today.

“I was lucky to find an employer who valued my ten years of experience in economics and agreed to hire me.”

Maksim Veselov, 30, Vladivostok

Maksim associates his move with professional experience and employment. The account does not name the immigration programme or permit conditions. It describes his circumstances without showing that any person with similar experience can follow the same route.

“It turned out that my passport had expired. I had to renew it. After that I sent the documents again, and it worked out.”

Ekaterina Markova, 25, Arkhangelsk

Ekaterina describes trying to join her father and making a further submission after renewing her passport. The account does not identify the family category. Her experience therefore cannot establish a general processing time or a complete sponsorship procedure.

Comparing countries for relocation involves the purpose of residence, family circumstances and budget. Canada immigration retains its own programme requirements within that comparison; personal accounts add context without replacing them.
